This is breakfast?


Why, yes. Anything can be breakfast. And if you are breakfast resistant like I can be sometimes, why not just eat what you feel like eating instead of forcing yourself to eat a traditional breakfast food, or worse, avoiding the whole breakfast thing. Eating a good breakfast is really important, and I know that, so when the cereal/fruit thing doesn't appeal to me, I eat something that may be weird, but as long as it's nourishing and appealing, then why not? If I want broccoli and Shan tofu over rice with a spritz of sriracha, that's what I have. I can't tell you how often I crave broccoli in the morning, but we always have a big bag of it in the fridge so I can accommodate my desire. Sometimes oatmeal just seems gross and broccoli sounds delicious.


When I saw a pudla post on Cakemaker to the Stars, I thought I was too lazy to make these delicious savory pancakes for breakfast, even though she insists the pancakes are for lazy people. Yes, I love chickpea flour pancakes in any form and in any language — socca, besan jo chillo, pudla, cecina — but like I said, I'm resistant to cooking in the morning. Morning is when I'm most likely to use the microwave. But, I just happened to have a bag of shredded cabbage, sliced radishes and green onions leftover from the previous night's salad, so mixing chickpea flour and water with some already prepared veggies and spreading the batter on a griddle seemed doable even for me. It was so good I made some the next day, too.


If I'm in the mood for a more "breakfasty" meal, I might go with Bob's Red Mill creamy buckwheat cereal, cooked with raisins and sprinkled with cinnamon, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, and frozen cherries — or whatever fruit appeals to me at the moment. Sometimes the fruit might be kalamata olives.  Creamy buckwheat cereal has been my standby breakfast for much of the winter.

I didn't photograph yesterday morning's breakfast — leftover jicama, cabbage, radish and satsuma salad. What do your typical, or more unusual breakfasts look like?

  1. THANK YOU!! You sound JUST like me re: breakfast. Just yesterday morning, BW looked over his bowl of steel cut oats and fruit at what I was eating (a bowl of whole wheat pasta with avocado, chickpeas and tamari roasted almonds with lemon juice, nooch, ground flax and oregano sprinkled on it) and said, "That is one weird breakfast." I told him I didn't care, and now I can tell him "And Andrea doesn't, either!" :-)~

    Adorable photos of Miss E and the little mister (and Callie) - I can see a very strong resemblance between you and Miss E in that photo! (Not the expression, the facial features. Though it could be what your expression looks like when you tell everyone that you'll bloody eat whatever you like for breakfast!) :-)

    1. Your breakfast sounds perfectly normal to me. Yesterday I had stir-fried broccoli and mushrooms with Thai sauce and pomegranate. Today it was beans and rice. I almost always add stuff like pumpkin seeds and hemp or chia. Whatever.

      Miss E used to look like a clone of her poppa, who looks like Ken's side of the family, but now I see her Mama showing up in her face. Maybe there's some of me, too!

  2. i hate traditional breakfast food! i always eat foods for breakfast that people would look at me weird for, like salad, pasta, or even sushi!

  3. wow! you really are all over the place with your breakfast desires. I am so normal. Today I had a piece of toast with jam, and a little bit of a banana. That said, I would pretty much eat up any of these things if you put them in front of me! I really love breakfast. I usually go to bed scheming about what I will eat for breakfast. :)

    1. Sometimes I am more normal, but not lately. Sometimes I just pour cereal out of a box. I go through phases and ruts. Sometimes I have a smoothie. Lately it's been all sorts of savory foods that I've been craving for breakfast. My ideal would be a breakfast buffet prepared by someone else! :)

  4. Aw, Miss E looks like she's loving being a big sister! What an adorable little guy.

    I have to eat breakfast within an hour after waking up or I'll start getting nauseous. It's always been that way for me. Usually I'll just have something small, like fruit or cereal. I love going to the co-op for their savory breakfasts sometimes, though. It's nice to switch it up!

    1. I think Miss E is a very doting big sister, though I'm sure having a baby around wasn't exactly as she imagined it would be!

      It used to be that if I ate within an hour of getting up, I'd get nauseous. I still tend to postpone breakfast as long as possible, but at least I now eat it.

  5. Those pics are cute beyond cute - particularly dog meets baby in lovely warmth!

    And yes, couldn't agree more on the brekkie thing - sometimes what I want is dinner for breakfast, rather than just a bowl of porridge (though I do like that too). I keep thinking I should try bringing them together - savoury porridge with some veggies or tofu in? Or does that sound too grim?!

    1. The dog and baby were touching head to head, though I doubt the baby knew it. The dog, however, put herself there on purpose!

      I have cooked cereal and savories for breakfast. Usually buckwheat or polenta, but any grain (except oats, bleh) is possible for me. I think I must have had too much oatmeal and need a break. :)

  6. I'm the same way with breakfast! Every once in a while I'll have typical breakfast fare like a tofu scramble, pancakes, or waffles. But usually that's just on the weekends when David and I are having a leisurely Saturday morning. More often than not, I'd rather have leftovers from dinner the night before. Early in the morning I prefer something substantive and easy that is the path of least resistance.

    Miss E's little brother is adorable and so expressive! Just seeing their sweet faces must make the world brighter for you.

  7. I actually really do like the typical breakfast foods, and I enjoy having some sort of breakfasty-type food every morning. I have been making Kittee's pudlas a lot recently, but we've been having them as quick, easy dinners. They are quickly becoming my favorite way to use up odds and ends in the fridge. :-)

    1. I had creamy buckwheat cereal this morning, a nice breakfasty kind of food. Only I had it with olives, hemp seeds and pumpkin seeds. I think Pudla makes a great lunch or dinner.

  8. Hmm I'm not the rebel you are, obviously. I find it hard enough to eat breakfast in the mornings as it is, and "lunchy" or "otherwise" foods are too dense and hearty for me most of the time. I'm not even a huge fan of brunch, the horror!
    I do like the idea of Gena's (Choosing Raw) breakfast salads, though. Have you tried something like that?

    1. I haven't tried Gena's salads but I did have a jicama/cabbage/satsuma salad with orange dressing, the other day.

I totally feel your pain and resistance to breakfast - not only is it a struggle to desire to cook at that time, by the time I've baked - no matter how delicious it is, it's a struggle to force it down. Then I'm starving at 10:30 or 11, so... convenience is a skill ;). I must add I've never had a problem eating 14 cookies upon waking, through. Your breakfast ideas look so appealing, too! And look at the crazy colours in that Bob's red mill buckwheat dish!

    1. If I avoid breakfast then eat at 11 or so, of course I'm not hungry for lunch. Then I'm starving at 4 or 4:30 and eat something, which means I'm not hungry for dinner. If I'm not hungry, I'm also not inclined to cook. Oh well.

  10. Yup, I pretty much eat dinner food for breakfast. Usually it's because I'm starving when I wake up. Once in a while, I'll eat regular breakfast food. And such cute photos! :-)
